How Aroma Impacts Mental & Physical Health

Uncategorized Nov 26, 2024

Essential oils have been used for centuries for wellness, but did you know that our sense of smell is directly linked to the brain's emotional & memory centers? When we inhale essential oils, aromatic molecules stimulate the olfactory nerves, sending signals to our brain. This process can trigger positive emotional responses, helping to reduce stress.

The hippocampus and the amygdala are the brain's emotional and memory centers of the brain which connect directly to the olfactory bulb (which is responsible for our sense of smell).
Research continues to indicate the link between aromatherapy and emotional regulation, stress relief, relaxation, and improving memory & attention!

Important Note: Aromatherapy is a complementary treatment and does not nor should not replace any other forms of physical or mental health treatments.

Rosemary is commonly associated with its positive effect on performance and mood (Sayorwan, 2013) and for its ability to reduce cortisol levels which relieves anxiety and stress (Boehm, et. al., 2012).

Specific compounds in Rosemary, rosmarinic acid and carnosic acid, show promising potential in their ability to improve symptoms from Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease (Rahbardar, 2020).

This research and alike is exactly why we've formulated Rosemary as the key component in Quella's Lucid Mind Blend!

Lavender, everyone loves it! For good reason - Lavender is excellent for calming the nervous system and improving overall mood. Lavender contains the molecular compound linalool which has been shown to lower blood pressure and reduce anxiety (Cleveland Clinic, 2021).

The act of smelling lavender is linked with improving pain and inflammation. In one study, people with menstrual pain smelled Lavender for 30 minutes during the first three days of their period - they experienced less pain after two months of doing so (Nikjou, et al., 2016).

Many of the hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare sites we supply aromatherapy products to love our Lavender essential oil proucts!

Lemon, a crowd pleaser - research shows how lemon oil can possess antidepressant effects, it's a good choice for stress management and moon enhancement (Sousa et al., 2017).

Lemon essential oil has also been linked with improving mental and physical task performance, and helps people feel more energetic throughout the day (Kiecolt-Glaser et al., 2007).

Lastly, lemon essential oil can help relieve symptoms of respiratory tract infections when inhaled. Add a few drops into a steaming bowl of water, let cool slightly, lean over the bowl and breathe deeply.

We've formulated Lemon essential oil into several blends, our favorite being Breathe Clear!
